Squaw Vine is an old folk remedy for
female problems. Native Americans
used this herb to assist all aspects of childbirth, including labor,
delivery, and expulsion of afterbirth. This herb was taken several
weeks before expected delivery, but never in the first two trimesters of
pregnancy. Squaw Vine or Partridgeberry is thought to stimulate the uterus and
encourage a safe and easier birth. It is also used to induce menstruation
and relieve painful menstruation. As an astringent, it has been used
in the treatment of colitis.
It may be used in nervous exhaustion or irritability in either sex,
especially when symptoms involve the reproductive system. Past topical
applications of Squaw Vine have been used as a salve for sore breasts in
nursing mothers.
